Southern Earth Sciences, Inc. (SES) served as the geotechnical engineer of record for the new 362,000 square foot Amazon fulfillment center in Theodore, Alabama. The massive distribution facility is located on a +/-30-acre site just off Interstate 10 in Mobile County. An aggressive project schedule created some challenging opportunities and the SES team was up to the task!

“This project is a game-changer for the regional economy. We were certainly glad to be a part of it and help them meet their deadlines.” – Lewis Copeland, Jr., P.E., SES President

SES’s engineers worked with Amazon’s development team throughout 2017 to provide the evaluation of site soils for the design of the building foundation and pavement construction. The geotechnical evaluation included over 30 soil borings using SES’s in-house drilling crews and equipment. Additionally, SES’s technical crews performed quality control testing and special inspections for the project.

“Amazon had an aggressive construction schedule to meet their target opening date ahead of the holidays. Inclement weather caused some delays, but we were able to meet the deadlines and keep the project on track,” shared Matt Coaker, P.E., SES’s lead geotechnical engineer for the project. “This project is an exciting addition to Mobile County and is sure to have a positive economic impact to the region,” added SES President, Lewis Copeland, Jr., P.E.
